Yoga in a GIF-y: Sun Salutation Arms

March 31, 2017

In a car? At your desk? On a plane? Chances are your shoulders and chest are experiencing tightness in one way or another and you don’t have the room to practice a full set of Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar).

Practice the Sun Salutation arm movements whenever you feel shoulder or upper back stiffness to open and strengthen the shoulder girdle.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Start with your hands together in front of the heart, palms touching and thumbs pressing into the sternum.

  2. Stay in this position for 3 cycles of breathing, observing the movement of your chest under your thumbs.

  3. On your inhale reach both arms up and overhead.

  4. As you exhale sweep the arms down, palms facing the floor until your hands touch your thighs

  5. Inhale, turn the palms up to face the sky and reach both hands back up and overhead.

  6. Exhale and pull the hands together in front of the heart.

  7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for 5-10 cycles.
