The other side of fear

What makes us feel angry, bitter and unhappy? If we dig deep, one of the possible reasons is likely to be fear; fear of loss, rejection, failure or being uncomfortable.

Fear is a state of mind and overthinking is our biggest enemy. We are sometimes our own biggest enemies; we put limitations to our abilities while we are capable of doing a lot of things if we just believe in ourselves, uncrippled by fear. Even if what you’re afraid of happens, it will be a new experience for you, failure will add to you, it will allow you to grow.

I’ve learned that fear is a normal thing, we have to feel fear, it's a normal response to physical and emotional danger. If we didn't feel it, we couldn't protect ourselves. Sometimes, fear is a result of traumas or bad experiences, but exposing ourselves out to fear is one of the best ways to move past it.

"We come into the world knowing how to be afraid, because our brains have evolved to deal with nature," LeDoux.

Facing your fears might be one of the hardest things to go through, but it’s also the best favor you can do for yourself: being aware of your fears and weak points is the first step to move past them. It's impossible to go through life without experiencing some kind of failure or rejection, it’s how you go far, how you grow spiritually, and how you learn a lot.

It's totally up to us to decide how to look at failure. We can see it as the end of the world, that life has lost its meaning, and live in sorrow and sadness for the rest of our lives, or we can see it as proof of how strong we are, practice our acceptance, use it as motivation to be better and prepare more for the next trial. Failure will stop us only if we let it.

If you look around you, you’ll find that most successful people have faced rejection and failure in their lives. It just doesn’t show because they didn't give up; they followed their heart and passion, and they reached where they are now by learning from their mistakes and moving on.

It's all in the mind, control your mind, don't let it control you.

So, don't be afraid to try, what's the worst thing that can happen? Easier said than done, right? Well, think instead of the opportunities you'll miss if you let your fears stop you. As they say, “Everything you have ever wanted, is on the other side of fear”. Shift your perspective and learn to put your heart out there, let go of how you think the outcome should be and accept the result, good or bad.

What you feel is your choice. Happiness is a choice and sadness is a choice, have faith that whatever happens is what’s meant to happen and maybe you will find the reason later. So, today choose courage and see for yourself where it takes you. Yoga is not only about the physical body, it's mainly about the mind and the stillness of the mind. So, learn to play with it, use it, quiet it down and control it. There’s so much potential there waiting to be unlocked.
