Mimi's Vegan Kitchen: Black Bean Burgers

I dread this time of year. As many of you already know, I’m pretty sensitive to slaughter. And even though this isn’t something I really have to face at home because we’re a primarily vegetarian household, I realize that it’s not the same for everyone and that meat is a theme at this time of year. So, when surrounded by friends and family eating meat, you can have your mock-meat too!

I never made the same veggie burger twice. Every time I throw in some things together in a food processor, make a big batch and freeze most of it. I end up consuming them for a period of two to three months and then when I run out, I try something new. Yes, veggie burgers are that easy to make! And because they’re mostly based on beans and grains, they’re usually loaded with protein! Now, I didn’t actually mean for this to look so much like a beef burger... I was just aiming for a dark veggie burger.

Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Serves: 4 people


  • 1 can of black beans (rinsed and drained) or 1 cup of cooked black beans

  • ½ a cup of ground oats

  • 1 onion (I used red)

  • 2 garlic cloves

  • 1 flax egg (1 tbsp of ground flax + 1 tbsp of water)

  • a handful of fresh Italian basil

  • 1 tsp of salt (or a bit less, adjust to taste)

  • ½ tsp of black pepper

  • ½ tsp of ground turmeric

Directions Step 1: Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and pulse until all the ingredients are well combined or to do this without a food processor you can mash the beans and then add the flax egg followed by the rest of the ingredients. You can easily mix all the ingredients using a fork.

Step 2: Using your hands, divide the mixture into 4. Shape each part into a ball and the flatten it using your hand or the flat back of a cup or plate.

Step 3: Sautee the patties for 3-5 minutes on each side on low heat. Alternatively you can bake them on medium setting for the same time. You can freeze the rest of the patties for months! I served mine on a gluten free bun from Sea Salt Bakery along with homemade barbeque sauce, garlic aioli, lettuce and tomatoes. For a side, I added baked sweet potato fries.
